Snowfall dates Mt Lofty 1868 to 1888 and 1901 to 1906 inclusive.

1. A list of dates snow fell on Mt Lofty 1868 to 1888, sent to The Register newspaper by Mr. Arthur Hardy.

Back to home page

This article below contains a list of dates that snow fell on Mt Lofty during the years 1868 to 1888 inclusive, sent to The Register by Mr. Arthur Hardy, who lived at Mount Lofty during those years. I presume he recorded these dates in a diary or some other place. How accurate the list is and whether he missed any snow events I'm unable to say. This entry was difficult and fiddly to proof against the original Trove image of the newpaper article, so please if you want to publish it, do check it first against the Trove version.

I've quoted the whole article, and I've reordered the entries so they run from earliest to latest date (they are in two columns in the newspaper article). For our purposes the key information in this article is the list of dates. He has included the "Mount Lofty Rain Gauge in 24 Hours" for those dates too.

SNOW ON MOUNT LOFTY.

{quote}

"Mr. Arthur Hardy has sent the following interesting communication:-

The extracts at foot from the rain gauge I kept during part of the time I lived at Mount Lofty, i.e., during the years 1868 to 1888 inclusive, may be of use to some of our scientific horticulturists in the hills to show them on which days and in which months during those years snow fell. Reference to the Adelaide daily newspapers of the dates given will in many instances refer to the rolled snowballs- often exceeding 100 lb. each in weight- which Cobb & Co.'s mail coaches on several occasions took to Adelaide: -

-Mount Lofty Rain Gauge in 24 Hours.-
August 1, 1869 .. 0.48
September 22, 1870 0.34
August 8, 1871 .. 0.90
August 10, 1872 .. 0.37
September 22, 1872 0.30
October 2, 1872 .. 0.24
September 5, 1873 0.15
September 21, 1874, and hail .. .. .. 0.54
September 28, 1874 0.16
June 16, 1876 .. .. 0.56
August 24, 1876 .. 0.50
September 16, 1876 0.56
June 10, 1878.. .. 0.80
July 8, 1878 .. No rain
July 23, 1879.. Snow all day.
October 27, 1883, 2 inches snow .. 0:40
July 11, 1886 .. .. 0.84
August 31, 1888, .. 0.50
September 1, 1888 0.34

About one-half the rainfall figures given for the days on which snow also fell will give approximately the rain gauge in Adelaide on those dates."

2. Another very similar list of snowfalls at Mt Lofty, for the periods 1866 to 1888 and 1901 to 1906 inclusive.

This list does not appear to be published on the internet {update 12th November 2016: see info about a copy I recently found on the internet here} and I obtained a scanned copy of the item from the State Library of South Australia. My thanks to them for ferreting the item out for me. It's in a short article "Adelaide Weather, Past and Present" by C. Hope Harris in The Public Service Review Vol XIII June-July, 1907, No. 6 or 7 (not sure which). As with the previous list I don't know how reliable it is or how complete a record of snowfalls on Mt Lofty during those years it gives.

If you need further details, click on the Library's permanent link http://www.catalog.slsa.sa.gov.au:80/record=b2235080~S1. The information given there includes:

Update 12th November 2016: Re my comment above: "This list does not appear to be published on the internet" I have found a copy of the article containing the Arthur Hardy list in a newspaper that's been added to the Trove website since my original search. Below are the details of the published article and then two screengrab images showing the list.
